How well do you know Old West slang?

Mosey on over if you ain't afeard.

The Old West, especially as portrayed in classic TV shows like Gunsmoke and Wagon Train, had many colorful characters who used equally colorful language. Charlie Wooster, the ornery cook on Wagon Train played by Frank McGrath, always had some choice words for anyone who insulted his cooking.

On Gunsmoke, Deputy U.S. Marshall Festus Haggen (played by Ken Curtis) often had something interesting to say, even if half the time you couldn't understand what he was actually saying!

Take the quiz below to see if you're fit for the open range.

11/15. Not bad considering I've never heard any of these words before.

I got them all, and I've never watched any of those shows. (Heck, I done never even heard of no Festus Haggen.) I have Appalachian roots, and I heard a lot of those terms from my pawpaw.

15/15. Did they get all these from Festus Hagen? My mother used to say "dilly dally".

Yeah, that one was pretty skeersome and almost foxed me but I didn't dilly-dally and dumb luck guessed the right answer.
