David Letterman was the king of self depreciating comedy. Plus he realized that what he was dealing with wasn't nuclear disarmament. It was just something that was fun. If you listen to his first post 911 show it had just the right tone for coming back after such a terrible event. You truly knew every word was sincere. The next night Jay was just clumsy in comparison. I don't think anyone could have done that better than Letterman.

53% similar. I grew up with watching Johnny, and settled in with Conan from almost from the beginning. Craig Ferguson had a good show going too on CBS on late, late nights too.

Ed Sullivan was never a late night talk show host. Why is he even listed? His was a prime time variety show that aired Sunday nights at 8pm. Definitely not in the late night category.

Well, when you have no one to compare to but ones like that weasel Paul Shaffer on David Letterman, then Ed McMahon was hilarious. Besides, Ed and Johnny both had CLASS. Something that is now extinct.

If I could have voted for Johnny Carson for each one, I would. Especially on skits, such as
Carnac the Magnificent, Art Fern and Tea Time Movies, Floyd R. Turbo, Aunt Blabby, The Edge of Wetness, Stump the Band. Mighty Carson Art Players, with skits on Karl Malden's American Express commercials, plenty of skits with President Reagan.

Even though I was too young for the most part for Steve Allen, Jack Parr or Ed Sullivan (Although saw some on Decades), I voted for them. None of these things, on today would be worthy to even clean his restroom.

Johnny Carson was the King of Late Night TV. 📺 He hasn’t been dethroned even after his passing. R.I.P. Johnny
Leno was great also. Iron Jay

No one could touch Carson. He didn't invent the form, but he shaped it in his image and all others pale in comparison.

86% similar. Personally I do not watch many late night shows this century. I'd much rather go on over to YT and watch Johnny Carson episodes. They have the best guests from the past and very funny and interesting.
