In the Heat of the Night was one of the earliest shows to deal with various societal issues, including racism, police brutality, mental disorders, domestic violence and more.

It largely follows the story of a chief of police and a police detective, acting as a sequel to the 1967 Academy Award-winning film that aimed to solve crimes and navigate racial divides in Mississippi. It starred Emmy winner John Carroll O'Connor as Bill Gillespie, best known as Archie on All in the Family, and Oscar-nominated actor Howard Hollins as Virgil Tibbs.

The show was nominated for several Golden Globes in eight seasons and became one of the most-watched shows in the late '80s to mid-'90s. As a fan favorite, several episodes seem to be the most popular, according to IMDb.

I never did like Bill and Harriet getting together. They might wish for one another from afar, however it would never happen like that because both were raised in the segregated South. I have several favorite episodes including the 13-year-old crack addict. The death of Mrs. Tibbs friend, Reginia. The young man turned gambler who has a $186K+ debt to the N.O. mob, and the man from New York City wanting to buy the local newspaper. There are others.

The description for the first one, " A Depraved Heart" is almost completely wrong. That is not the story line. It is my favorite episode, or at least top 10, and Lisa Rieffel's acting is the main reason, plus the story is good.

I didn't like any of those episodes. My favorite is Bubba's Baby, followed by Night of the Stranger.

I could never get into it. I always thought “why does Archie Bunker have a southern accent”?

I think all those episodes were great in their own way but i picked The Correct Settling as my favorite episode. As for why it is my favorite episode i liked how the Chief and Harriet's relationship advanced as they started talking about maybe living together. And i also liked the conversation between Harriet and her ex-husband because i think they sort of got closure to their relationship and maybe even started getting along as friends.

All I did was read all the synopses and pick the one that I thought was the most interesting. Guess I was right because I got 100% similar.

One of the best was where Gillespie tried to stop an execution.

In recent years, I have had exposure to this show. There are episodes in the first couple seasons that I quite like, but I feel the series quickly goes off track.

Despite the small town that Sparta is, most of the criminals tend toward upper-middle class.

The show was total crap.
Did CBS owe O'Connor a favor?
Though sad for Howard Rollins who was eclipsed by the superior Denzel.
After Ragtime, wasn't Howard the Next Big Thing...of the moment?

actually Hugh died of a self inflicted gunshot wound, but his drug habit did not help him. I read Carrolls book, he was talking to Carroll on the phone when he shot himself.

Howard Rollins had substance abuse problems because he was a closeted gay man who was thrust so firmly into the limelight that he could never even think of living his life freely or coming out. That kind of pressure can ruin a person, and it did so to Rollins. He eventually died of AIDS-related lymphoma. He was only 46.
