Bea Arthur called Dorothy and Sophia's relationship ''one of the greatest comic inventions of all time.''
“It was a feel-good show,” said the actor.
There’s no telling exactly what makes a television show so successful, though some series may have mastered the recipe more than others. For example, a show like The Golden Girls was not only wildly successful during its original airing in the 1980s, but to this day, it remains a source of laughter for fans everywhere.
One of the stars of the series, Bea Arthur, understood that the success of the series lay in tone and chemistry.
“It was a feel-good show,” said the actor during an interview with The Toronto Star. “That’s why it worked so well then and still works now in reruns. Besides, the relationship between Sophia and me is one of the greatest comic inventions of all time. Our differences in height, personality, everything.”

“I thought it was the most adult, witty, juicy thing I’d seen in a long time,” said the actor. “It never really dawned on me that it had to do with older women until I started getting letters from people saying it made them realize that older women could still be attractive, sexy, and full of juice for life.”
