Before Everybody Loves Raymond, Doris Roberts experienced a drought in her career

Doris Roberts enjoyed a long and fruitful acting career, but she wasn’t always so successful. The actor opened up about the ups and downs of her career during an interview with the Calgary Herald.
“I was a guest on David Letterman’s Show,” said the actor. “He asked if I’d ever had a hard time. ‘Hard time?’ There was a 10-year career break when I couldn’t get arrested!”
Roberts primarily made her mark on the television industry through guest appearances on shows like The Love Boat and St. Elsewhere. However, her hard work paid off when she was cast as Marie Barone in the hit sitcom, Everybody Loves Raymond.

Roberts noted that another unusual aspect of the series was that there was no struggle for power behind the scenes.
“No one on this show is trying to grab the spotlight,” said the actor. “No one’s trying to score an individual touchdown. It’s the best ensemble I’ve ever worked with. We do something that I’ve never heard of on any other series. If the script is difficult for any one of us, we all get together on Saturday with the dialogue coach to rehearse. There’s no overtime, no extra money - nobody cares about that. We simply do it until we get it right and everybody is comfortable.”
