It can be tough to feel important when you're standing next to Superman, but we've never seen anyone hold their own better than Lois Lane. It's no wonder that the character had so many fans during the Adventures of Superman.

However, that doesn't mean playing the Daily Planet reporter wasn't a challenge. Noel Neill, who played Lane from season two of the series onward, explained the limitations that came with playing the character.

"You couldn't be too mean to anyone," said Neill during an interview with The Knoxville News-Sentinel. "It was a man's world, and you didn't want (your character) to be too cranky. When I played (Lois), I could relate to her more if she wasn't bossy."

While many films have taken on a more serious perspective of Superman, Neill explained that Adventures of Superman preferred a lighthearted approach, one that was reflected both on set and on screen.

"You really didn't have time to develop serious characters," said Neill, according to DC Comics: Sixty Years of the World's Favorite Superheroes, written by Les Daniels.

"We enjoyed working with each other, and that was the way we played it."

Neill also revealed that originally, she had no plans to work as an actor. The daughter of a newspaper editor, Neill planned to follow in Lois Lane's footsteps as a reporter.

"There weren't too many jobs for women as reporters back then," said Neill during an interview for Scripps Howard News Service. "There was only one woman at the paper then, and she wrote a column."

But as an actor, Neill was thrilled by the impact she had on the public, as well as her fans. "It's a great feeling when people come up to you and say they grew up with you," said the actor. "I love connection."
