Bette Davis surprised Alan Hale Jr. on the set of Gilligan's Island

That day, the laughter on set was real.

As a talented actor from a Hollywood family, Alan Hale Jr. found himself constantly surrounded by stars and celebrities. While Hale is primarily known for his role as the Skipper in the hit series Gilligan's Island, his father appeared in films like The Trap (1922) and The Adventures of Robin Hood (1922). Though Hale Sr. passed away in 1950, those who knew him frequently commented on how much Alan Hale Jr. resembled his father.

One of these people was actually the elder Hale's former co-star, famed actor Bette Davis. Davis and Hale had previously worked together on the film Fog Over Frisco (1934). According to an article in The North Adams Transcript, Davis thought she spotted Hale Jr. years later on set.

"Why, Alan Hale, you look so much like your father," said Davis. In reality, the actor was speaking to Tom Keegan, who frequently worked as a stunt double for both the elder and younger Hale men.

Davis hadn't seen Alan Hale Jr. since he was a young man, but Keegan remained close with the younger Hale. To reunite the two pals, he and Davis were able to pull a warmhearted prank on Hale Jr., who was just a few sets away, filming Gilligan's Island. Davis was snuck onto the set where she surprised Hale during filming, proclaiming, "I'm shipwrecked too, Mr. Hale."

This lighthearted moment was just a small example of the delightful time the cast and crew had while filming the television series.

"We have a ball doing Gilligan's Island," said Hale. "It's a fun show. No one takes it seriously. There's always a gag about something. They say Bob Hope's sets attract the biggest gallery of studio visitors, but I doubt that now. I think our galleries are bigger. We should have a sign outside the set reading, 'Disneyland Annex.'"
