Though there was enough star power in The Golden Girls cast to fuel the sun, many might be shocked to learn that no actor’s self-esteem was harmed during the filming of the hit series.

During an interview with The Associated Press, one of the show’s stars, Betty White, cast aside rumors that tensions flared on set.

“There are no egoes; there’s no dissension. We’re all given equal treatment. If someone gets the main story, the others are always involved in a subplot.”

Because The Golden Girls was such a popular and well-written series, there was no weak plot for any actor to get stuck with. White seemed to prefer the freedom that acting in a subplot allowed her.

“Actually, it’s more fun when you’re not driving the plot,” said the actor. “You can be sillier.”

The ladies on set also played vastly different characters, which meant that no actor spent their days on set attempting to steal another’s scene. As older, more mature women, White and her co-stars never viewed each other as a challenge. Alongside Bea Arthur, Estelle Getty, and Rue McClanahan, each actor on The Golden Girls understood their own merit as individual actors.

“Our frame of reference is similar,” White said during an interview with The Times. “At our age, we’re also pretty secure in our own careers, so no one is vying for center position. The set is completely relaxed, and that’s unique."
