Though we all imagine an actor’s life begins and ends in Hollywood, there are plenty of lucrative spaces where an actor can learn their craft. After years of acting on screen, Dana Andrews was able to become a better actor after just a few months of acting on the stage.

Today, Andrews is known for his work on films like Curse of the Demon (1957) and The Best Years of Our Lives (1946). During an interview with the Connecticut Post, Andrews revealed that he had dreamed of becoming an actor at a young age,

“I came to realize I was only a punk kid with a little amateur experience,” said the actor, “like thousands of other idiots who walked in and asked for a job, and that I had to get some experience.”

Andrews quickly made a name for himself as a film actor. But it wasn’t until he joined the cast of the Broadway play “Two for the Seesaw” that his career took a pivot. In an interview, the actor revealed that the role changed his life, as well as his career.

“Playing on the stage demands total concentration and absolute devotion to the part you’re playing,” Andrews said. “You can grow on the stage. After a year of playing the lead, I had just begun to understand it, to understand what the author meant me to be. When I started in the play, I was overemotional…What is difficult is to convey feelings in a quiet and reserved way.”
