Dennis Weaver said his wife's support was a key reason for his success
True love means unconditional support.
No one is truly alone in this life. We are able to enjoy our successes knowing they were earned with the support of friends and family.
Since 1945, Dennis Weaver’s main source of support in his life had been his wife, Gerry Stowell. During an interview, the Gunsmoke actor admitted that when he was struggling early on in his acting career, his wife was able to support their family. This allowed Weaver to pursue his craft. The actor would later be cast as Chester Goode in Gunsmoke and became a television star.
“In New York, she [Gerry] worked at regular office jobs, and if she hadn’t, we’d never have made it,” Weaver said during an interview with The Monitor. “And I’m proud to say that she hasn’t had to work since. For a salary, I mean.”
Moreover, Gerry didn’t just provide financial support; she also emotionally supported her husband. “She’s worked all the time,” said Weaver. “She’s worked all the time; she’s the moral support. Like when we came to Hollywood.”
The two saw marriage as a partnership, as well as an opportunity to lift each other up when needed.
“That’s the wonderful thing about our relationship,” said Weaver. “We always seem to have adjusted to each other and to the changes in our lives and go ahead with it. There are going to be changes, and you’d better be able to adjust. It’s like the green sapling that bends while the dry limb breaks. We try to be green saplings, and by gosh, we have been.”
