Devon Sawa gave his right hand a Looney Tunes-esque personality in preparation for Idle Hands
"I concentrated on giving the hand its own character."
Parents, take heed; your teen might be lazy, but they’re definitely not so lazy that their right arm becomes possessed by an evil spirit.
So goes the plot of the 1999 cult classic film, Idle Hands. Directed by Rodman Flender, the film centers on a teen so slothful that he must jump into action when he discovers his right hand has become murderous. Devon Sawa, who played the young man in the comedy horror film, seemed to acknowledge the incredulity of the film.
“Anton is the laziest kid in the world,” Sawa said of his character during an interview with The Grand Rapids Press. “Which is why the devil picks him as his host.”
However, one of the beautiful things about a horror film is the audience’s ability to suspend their disbelief for a few moments. As an actor, Sawa gave into the absurdity of the film.
“I concentrated on giving the hand its own character - Elmer Fudd meets Bugs Bunny, with me being Elmer and the hand being Bugs.”
Idle Hands wouldn’t be Sawa’s final foray into horror - the actor became known as the star of the popular film, Final Destination (2000). Previously, however, Sawa was known as a “teen idol,” having appeared in films like Casper (1995).
“When you’re a ‘heartthrob,’ you’re appealing for a certain time until the next heartthrob comes along,” said Sawa. “Then you’re old news. That’s not what I wanted.”
