Don Knotts was only possessive of one of his characters
This was one of the actor's favorite roles.

If a character is truly well-loved, it'll live on long after the actor who plays them passes away. Although Don Knotts is no longer with us, his comedic talents live on through shows like The Andy Griffith Show and films. Knotts wasn't just a talented actor; he was also incredibly generous. The actor wasn't precious with his characters. If someone wanted to revive one of his films, he was more than happy to send his blessing.
Just think back to some years ago when rumors began swirling that there were talks of a reboot of The Incredible Mr. Limpet, this time starring Jim Carrey.
Knotts couldn't have been more supportive.

It seems that there was only one role that Knotts was a bit possessive of. "Now, if someone else did Barney Fife, THAT would be different," said Knotts.
Barney Fife is the jewel in the crown of Knotts' acting career.
Knotts wasn't alone in his feelings about The Andy Griffith Show. According to an interview with the Knight-Ridder News Service, Andy Griffith put an end to a potential film rebooting of the series, complete with all new actors.
"They wouldn't give me script approval," said Griffith. "The old Griffith show means a great deal to me and I don't want to kill its memory. I'm not saying they couldn't have done a wonderful job with it. But I'm afraid."
