Doris Roberts thought of Ray Romano and Brad Garrett as her real-life sons

Some friendships are forged early in life, but Doris Roberts was lucky enough to gain two powerful young friends when she joined the cast of Everybody Loves Raymond.
Roberts had already had quite an impressive career when she was cast as Marie Barone. But according to her memoir, Are You Hungry, Dear? Life, Laughs, and Lasagna, Roberts explained that she didn’t just gain a new role; she also gained two sons in her co-stars, Brad Garrett and Ray Romano.
“There were my boys,” wrote the actor. “It’s hard not to think of them as my sons because they work so beautifully as a pair. Brad Garrett, the goofy cutup with the hangdog face of deep sorrow, made the rehearsals so much fun.

I’ve watched him grow as an actor, and it’s a pleasure working with him.”
The series had taken a cast and crew and turned them into a second family.
“Phil Rosenthal and his band of writers had found in Ray a way to express something about the true nature of family - and not just the Hallmark-card version,” wrote Roberts. “And Phil had found a cast that really felt like family.”
