Pittsburgh, Zombie City!
As the home and base of operations for George Romero, Pittsburgh is forever associated with zombies, at least for those in the know. Romero took all the equipment, crewmembers, and experience he gathered from making commercials for local businesses and created Night of the Living Dead. The movie shocked the world when it premiered in 1968, and its influence has been felt in movies ever since. From that single, blood-soaked flag planted in the Steel City, clawed an entire history of the shambling undead.
Dawn of the Dead, an Instant Classic!
All nights are followed by a dawn. So, ten years later, Night of the Living Dead finally had a worthy follow-up, with Romero's Dawn of the Dead, an equally seismic and important movie in zombie history. This time, in vivid color, the living dead shuffled about in a shopping mall, echoing their former lives in an ever-prescient capitalist critique. It was easy to see how these zombies must've gone through life, stuffing their faces with Cinnabon while mindlessly perusing Sears.
Attention Shoppers!
Dawn of the Dead was set in a real mall that allowed Romero and his cohorts to spill as much blood, lop off as many limbs, and blow away as many heads as they wanted. The palace of purchase that appears on screen is Monroeville Mall, located just east of Pittsburgh proper. In the decades since, a few tributes to the movie and its creator have been erected throughout, ensuring that it forever remains a must-visit location for East Coast horror fans. Until now!
While the Monroeville Mall may have survived hordes of zombies, it is now up against an even ghastlier threat, as the location has recently been purchased by a far uglier menace... Walmart!
