James MacArthur said that his Hawaii Five-O co-star Jack Lord was a ''loner''
The stressful filming schedule took its toll on Lord.
Not all co-stars are destined to become best friends. At the end of the day, acting is just a job, and you are not required to like your coworkers.
Jack Lord and James MacArthur starred alongside each other for more than a few years while working on Hawaii Five-O. During that time, the series became an imperative piece of television history. Specifically, Steve McGarrett’s oft-used quote, “Book him, Danno,” became a common phrase in everyday conversation.
Oddly enough, Danno himself, James MacArthur, revealed that the popularity of the phrase came as a surprise to both the cast and crew.
“He said ‘book him’ to others in the cast, but I guess he said it to me the most,” said MacArthur during an interview with the Chicago Tribune. “It wasn’t anything we really thought about at first. But the phrase just took off and caught the public’s imagination. The culture grabbed it, and it’s been around ever since.”
Off-screen, MacArthur wasn’t frequently in contact with series star Jack Lord. However, their distance wasn’t the result of any bad blood between the two actors; rather, their time and energy on set were consumed by performing. There was little time to socialize.
“Jack was very much a loner,” said MacArthur. “But to be nonest, there was little time for getting together. We worked six days a week and were out the door at 6:30 every morning. They were long days, and by Saturday night, you were done in.”
