Julie Newmar on why she liked being insecure
"I don't think I'm as good at what I'm doing as I should be," said the actor.
Weirdly enough, there are some benefits to insecurity. Sure, confidence is important, but for some people, insecurity helps fuel your drive to become a better person.
An actress like Julie Newmar seems like she'd have no shortage of confidence. However, Newmar kept a very open outlook on the acting industry and felt that insecurity was actually the antidote to an inflated ego.
"There are two kinds of actors," said the Batman actor during an interview with the Statesville Record and Landmark. "Those who don't think they are good enough and the megalomaniacs who think they're too good for anybody else."
Newmar felt that she'd rather be included in the former category, rather than the latter. The actor argued that those too focused on themselves may overextend themselves in an attempt for total control, a rookie mistake in the acting industry.
"The second type wants to write, produce, direct, fix the camera position and tell the electrician to keep the key light on them at all types."
Newmar didn't consider herself that sort of actor. It's not that she had low self-esteem; she just valued a bit of insecurity in order to keep her determination and her good work ethic.
"Me, I'm the insecure kind of actress," said Newmar. "I don't think I'm as good at what I'm doing as I should be. So I try to work harder and with more integrity. I find myself drawn to performers who feel the same way I do - and I avoid the egocentric characters."
