You can't fake faith in yourself, but confidence is merely a state of mind. Some people have it, whether they've earned it or not, and some people simply don't.

To have an opportunity to star in The Dick Van Dyke Show is enough to boost anyone's confidence, but Mary Tyler Moore never let such success go to her head. Originally, the role of Laura Petrie was meant to be much smaller, but with Moore's charm and talent for comedy, Laura soon became an integral part of the series.

Still, when asked whether the success of the series had affected her attitude, Moore remained humble.

"I find now that I can walk into one of those horribly big cocktail parties and not be scared because I know several people in the room are going to start a conversation with me if I can't start one with them," said Moore during an interview with The Atlanta Journal. "It does give me confidence in that I can walk into a store, and if I find that I'm out of checks I don't have to fumble and be embarrassed. Credit is easily extended to me."

Moore maintained that there was a big difference between success and true security.

"Those are all very nice little side attributes of being successful, but they don't make you a secure person," said Moore."

Furthermore, Moore was quick to share the wealth of the success that her time on The Dick Van Dyke Show had given her, instead choosing to give credit for such victories to the series.

"I'm no different as a result of our success," said Moore. "I didn't make the Van Dyke Show a success. The Van Dyke Show made me a success, so I haven't really accomplished anything."
