One terrified tourist hit Glenn Strange with her purse after she spotted him in his monster makeup on the set of Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein
Strange was in for a spooky surprise.
If you live in a populated area, you're no stranger to tourists. They're always crowding the walkways, making your commute more difficult than it needs to be. And just how many pictures do they need to take of a building or a landmark?
Okay, maybe we're a little sensitive, but if you don't believe us, take Glenn Strange's word for it.
According to Gregory William Mank's book, It's Alive! The Classic Cinema Saga of Frankenstein, the actor had quite the run-in with a tourist. You might know Strange as The Creature in Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein. While shooting that film, Strange recounted a lunch date he had with fellow actor Ann Blyth, who was also on set shooting Mr. Peabody and the Mermaid. Strange was still wearing his Frankenstein getup, while Blyth wore a mermaid costume.
"We were just minding our own business, having our lunch outside a soundstage, when it happened," he said. "Like me, Ann had to keep on her makeup until the day's shooting was over. Naturally, she couldn't walk around with her feet covered with a mermaid's body, so they had fixed up a little cart for her to lie in."
A word to the less-than-wise: If you're on a film lot, you're probably going to see some weird stuff. Apparently, a certain tourist was unsure of just how strange things could get and did not respond well.
"Well, this tourist suddenly came around the corner and saw us," said Strange. "She took one look at the crazy sight of a Monster and mermaid eating lunch together, let out a screech, and hit me in the face with her purse! Then, she ran off screaming bloody murder, leaving me with my lunch all over my face and costume!"
