Director Robert Aldrich said there was no ''explosion'' between Joan Crawford and Bette Davis on the set of What ever Happened to Baby Jane?
The director said that a big fight on the film set "never happened."

Nowadays, a feud is a dime a dozen. Of course, not everyone can get along so well, but it seems that nobody has a problem airing out their personal business these days.
Back in the days of old Hollywood, there was nothing quite like a good feud, especially if that feud was between two co-stars. Bette Midler and Joan Crawford, both talented actors, are perhaps as well known for their hatred for each other as they are for their roles.
Both women made their mark on Hollywood. Though their distaste for each other was well known, the two starred together in the well-known film, Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?
It seemed like an accident waiting to happen. However, according to the film’s director, Robert Aldrich, that simply wasn’t the case. “Everyone around them was waiting for the ladies to explode,” said Aldrich in Boze Hadleigh’s book, Bette Davis Speaks. “Never happened.”
The film was nominated for several awards, including Best Actress for Davis.
Despite their ability to remain civil, that didn’t mean that there were any warm or fuzzy feelings between the two actors.
Davis made the distinction during an interview. “[I] hated her guts, but we did not feud at all,” Davis said of Crawford.
The actor credited her dislike of Crawford to her attitude. “You can’t blame anything or anyone else,” said Davis. “We create our personalities, and it’s no use complaining about a bad childhood, because once you’re an adult, you run your own life, or should.”
