Robert Wagner trusted his Hart to Hart co-star Stefanie Powers to defend him against any bad guys
Powers was more than willing to fight for her on-screen husband.
After playing a married couple on screen for so long, Robert Wagner and Stefanie Powers developed a genuine friendship off-screen. Powers and Wagner portrayed married couple Jonathan and Jennifer Hart, a wealthy couple who frequently dabble in crime-solving, on the popular series Hart to Hart. Everybody has to have a hobby, right?
But off-screen, Wagner and Powers felt a devotion to each other that rivaled that of their character’s. The two developed a friendship and frequently worked together when away from the series.
During an interview, Wagner seemed confident that, should the lines between fiction and reality blur, he was more than confident in Powers’ ability to rescue him from any sort of bad guy.
“Stefanie is very handy,” said Wagner during an interview with USA Today. “I’m sure that if I were in any kind of trouble - as Jonathan Hart or as Robert Wagner - she’d take somebody out for me. Or at least try.”
While Powers had no doubt that she could defend her friend, she understood that a character like Jennifer Hart had her own sort of quiet power that was not to be trifled with.
“I never thought that women had to assert themselves in order to be recognized,” Powers said. “I think that Jennifer is the sort of character that, if Jonathan weren’t here, she’d try to defend herself, and maybe be able to with karate or whatever.”
Though the series lasted for roughly five years, Powers and Wagner remained close after the series ended in 1984.
