"It’s the other side of the Don Juan syndrome."

To sitcom lovers, Blanche Devereaux was the perfect temptress. Of course, the heart of The Golden Girls was the friendship between the women, though few could deny that their love lives brought endless entertaining escapades.

But despite her reputation as a flirt, Rue McClanahan confessed that her character might have been full of hot air. “Even Sophia dates more than Blanche,” said McClanahan during an interview with the Associated Press. “Blanche talks about men all the time, but she never dates.”

McClanahan took a hedonistic approach to her portrayal of Blanche, despite the fact that the two women couldn’t be more different. “I was almost single-mindedly devoted to my career in the theater, so I don’t think I’ve ever been like Blanche,” said the actor during an interview with the Wisconsin State Journal. “Although I love playing the femme fatale.”

Still, McClanahan wanted to ensure that the character remained three-dimensional. “She’s in love with life, and she loves men,” the actor told The Associated Press. “I think she has an attitude toward women that’s competitive. She is friends with Dorothy and Rose, but if she has enough provocation, she becomes competitive with them.”

In fact, despite the character’s bold confidence and flashy attitude, McClanahan seemed to believe that Blanche’s boisterous personality was overcompensating for something self-conscious underneath.

“I think basically she’s insecure,” said the actor. “It’s the other side of the Don Juan syndrome.”
