Starring in Laverne & Shirley put a real damper on Cindy Williams' love life
"I wonder the real motive now when somebody wants to date me," she said.
You might assume that when you become a star, doors that were once closed suddenly open themselves to you. Perhaps that's true for some things; once you become a star, you're granted access to first-rate restaurants and parties. However, according to Cindy Williams, celebrity really doesn't help the old love life.
During an interview with The State, Williams revealed that her stardom in the series Laverne & Shirley had not, in fact, led to an increase in gentleman callers. "In fact, nobody rings," said Williams. "I suppose it would take a man with fantastic self-confidence, great faith in himself; somebody who wouldn't worry that I might turn him down because he wasn't rich enough, or famous enough. Or perhaps they don't call because they think I already have a date, or I'm too busy."
Williams' newfound fame also complicated her dating life, as she became uncertain of the intentions of potential partners.
"I wonder the real motive now when somebody wants to date me," she said. "It's something you don't have to think about when you're not famous. I ask myself, 'Does he want to be on the cover of the National Enquirer...?'"
However, Williams was able to find solace in her work. "My career is what I'm married to," she said. "Even when I was doing in theatre in college. I realized that it was something I could always depend on; that here was a relationship that always gave me back what I put into it; that it was fifty-fifty, totally dependable, and would support me as long as I supported it."
