William Smith explained what it was like to work with Jack Lord during the final season of Hawaii Five-O
The actor had no issue speaking honestly.
During his nearly 80-year acting career, William Smith appeared in a myriad of roles on both film and television. Smith was predominantly known for her time playing villains, though he did entertain audiences as the hero more than a few times.
One such moment was when Smith joined the cast of Hawaii Five-O for the show’s final season. Smith’s arrival was originally due to the departure of James MacArthur, who had previously played Danny Williams for a majority of the series.
After MacArthur’s departure, rumors began to swirl that the actor had experienced issues with the series star, Jack Lord.
“I replaced James MacArthur, who quit the show because Jack Lord wouldn’t let him have a dressing room,” said Smith during an interview with Shock Cinema. “He had to change in the prop truck for eleven years.”
Smith, who had been on his fair share of sets, was honest about his brief working relationship with Lord. “I don’t know what was the matter with him [Jack].” “He had the world by the tail, but he didn’t get along with anybody.”
However, this sour experience seemed to be an anomaly in Smith’s career, who enjoyed his time working with directors like Bill Bixby and Robert Aldrich.
“One of the best directors I worked for was Bill Bixby,” said the actor. “He was a terrific director. And Robert Aldrich was a hell of a guy, man. I really enjoy working for him. I did a small role in Twilight’s Last Gleaming, and then he gave me a nice part in The Frisco Kid.”
