As a kid I always got upset when "Uncle Jed" played bad guys. Mainly because he was so good at it.
He played the head of a family of mass murderers who knocked off travelers staying at their stage
station on the 101st episode of "Maverick", he was chilling! It was based on a real family.
Ebsen also appeared on Have Gun Will Travel as a bad guy.
I think my favorite role was when he appeared on a Bonanza episode later on in the run,
as a veteran cowboy who Ben is overly harsh with and fires. Ebsen then challenges Ben
to leave his fancy ranch and get a job as a regular hand on a ranch. Really well written
and one of the best episodes of the entire series as it deals with many themes.
Probably have to watch it twice to catch everything that is going on.
Lorne Greene also can be seen upping his acting game to match Ebsen's, two old pros
circling each other and enjoying the challenge.
