Human Desire (1954)-1 hr 31 min- Drama--Film-Noir--Romance

MQ for 03/31/2023-

It explores themes of desire, greed, and betrayal, and directors direction is masterful in creating tension and suspense.

This movie really hits all the noir bases and hits them well. The story, which concerns murder and a femme fatale, is pretty much the epitome of the genre, while the directors use of shadow gives a film a real sense of dark brooding, which blends nicely with the nature of the central cast of characters; all festering behind a mundane small town exterior.

Within this sliver we get a stifling portrait of narrow lives as restrictively defined as a train car passageway, the typical of this director's fatalism but with a more pointedly feminine perspective.

The male actor in this plays his usual milquetoast, who here dips a toe into the possibility of murder for love, then backs out, free to shake the whole thing off as a bad dream. For her it’s not that simple, as she’s trapped inside of a triangle of men (the lascivious boss / the jealous husband / the new lover unwilling to accept her for what she’s been shaped into), with no options for conducting a life without the help of one of these points.

Trains have excited filmmakers and Freudians since the beginning. This director doesn’t cheat himself and he gives us lots of long POV shots of rail lines running towards the horizon metaphorical of escape, locomotives bursting into tunnels, dark tunnels of inner turmoil, and lights at the end of tunnels. And sometimes a train is just a train. Trains also make great settings for thrillers because they both in motion and confining. Hitchcock invented the vocabulary of the railroad thriller, and this director uses it well to ratchet up the suspense. The film's story is engaging and keeps the audience on the edge of their seat throughout.

I downloaded Google Earth once and looked up the house I grew up in [I'd sold it a couple of years before and I wanted to see what had been done with it]. Found the house, did the 360-degree spin around the outside...three sides were the way it looks now [painted blue, there's a railing around the porch now--I'm SO envious of that] and the side that faces the driveway was the same as it was the last time I saw it, white vinyl siding with red trim...no, I don't know why...

I have done the same thing a half dozen times the past 10 years. Probably posted somewhere on here in the past also. It was around 1968 when I left that home my parents sold. I went by it in 1990's and left San Diego in 2003 for where I live now in Texas. School across the street is still there plus the palm trees in front of some homes. Brings back a lot of memories.

9/10 my favorite actor in tz, burgess or John Anderson next

8 of 10. I generally associated Jack Klugman with Oscar Madison in the Odd Couple. In Twilight Zone he could play more dramatic roles. The "In Praise of Pip" episode always gets me a little misty at the end. They were all great episodes!

9/10. I know my TZ episodes. My favorite with Klugmann was "A Game of Pool".

Just watching all those episodes with my dad as a kid, and now watching them with my son, paid off for something. Lol.
