A new (unofficial) Star Trek movie premieres this weekend

Walter Koenig and Tim Russ in 'Star Trek: Renegades'

Trekkies, ever wonder what became of Pavel Chekov? Well, supposedly he's 143, an Admiral, and head of Starfleet Intelligence — at least according to the new unofficial Star Trek movie Renegades. Using Kickstarter and Indiegogo, the producers of the indie feature raised $375,555 to create the film and special effects.

But more importantly, they nabbed Walter Koenig to reprise his role of Chekov. More original Star Trek actors return, including Tim Russ, who played Tuvok on Voyager. Robert Picardo, who appeared alongside Russ as the holographic doctor on Voyager, now gets to be an in-the-flesh doctor. Loyal fans will spot more familiar Trek faces, too. Russ pulls double duty and also directs what he hopes is the pilot for a new series.

Several other familiar names of geek culture pop up in the cast, too. Sean Young (Blade Runner), Edward Furlong (Terminator 2) and Grant Imahara (Mythbusters) all have roles. Click here to read more about the movie and watch the trailer below.

The labor of love is premiering this weekend, August 1, at the Crest Theater in Los Angeles at 8PM.

Can't make it? Watch the original voyages of the Enterprise on Star Trek at 9PM | 8C on MeTV.
