Al Harrington on why he left Hawaii Five-O

"I’m sorry to be leaving the show, but I feel I’ve learned so much."

Leaving a series behind is never an easy task, even for the most talented of actors. Al Harrington was a skilled performer and became nationally known in television when he took on the role of Detective Ben Kokua on the popular crime series, Hawaii Five-O.

Though Harrington was introduced in the middle of the series, Ben Kokua quickly became a fan favorite. But after only three seasons, his character was phased out of the show.

While Harrington wasn’t particularly specific on the events surrounding his departure, the actor seemed to insinuate that his character’s popularity posed a threat to the series star, Jack Lord.

“Jack Lord is very definitely the star of Five-O,” said Harrington during an interview with the Fort Lauderdale News, “and there were feelings when Ben became so popular.”

Still, Harrington was grateful for his time on the series. “I’m sorry to be leaving the show, but I feel I’ve learned so much and made so many beautiful friends. I can’t be bitter...I never dreamed I would become so well-known. This is especially good for Hawaii.”
