The Andy Griffith Show has long been regarded by viewers and critics alike as one of the best sitcoms in history, with Sheriff Taylor remaining a fan favorite throughout the show’s multi-season run.
During an interview with Knight-Ridder, Griffith admitted he was still mystified by the show’s consistent success, even years after it went off the air.

Of course, while Sheriff Taylor was the perfect role model, he was almost too morally upright for his own show.
“Andy Taylor was such a good man,” said Griffith. “But you know, until about the last year, we could not write shows that were about Andy. Because Andy was too good. You have to have a weakness somewhere in order to write a show for you. There has to be a flaw. And Andy was a good man. If you look back on all those shows, they were never about Andy. While I was in every show, in almost every scene, it wasn’t about me. It was always about one of the other characters.”
