Blood From the Mummy's Tomb: The director died, but the production lived on!
Here's how a death at the helm shaped the movie we love.
If there's one thing a movie needs, it's a living director. Sure, horror films might have dead people in them, but they're best when the people making them are still alive. That's just a general rule of thumb. We're sure there's a great flick or two made by a ghost, and who are we to judge? For the most part, though, you're going to want your entire cast and crew to survive the entire production. It's just good business.
However, life, like many things, isn't guaranteed. One minute, you're here. The next, you're toppling pins in the great bowling alley in the sky, brother. It's the circle of life, and it moves us all, even British directors named Seth.
But, don't just take our word for it. Movie fans can turn the pages of London's Monthly Film Bulletin for the inside scoop. Specifically, Vol. 38, Issue 444 from January 1st, 1971, contains the story about how Blood From the Mummy's Tomb was finished by an uncredited second director after the first one croaked.
"Seth Holt died while shooting Blood from the Mummy's Tomb; the final week's work was directed by Michael Carreras, who obviously made every effort to adopt Holt's visual style. Holt, however, was apparently revising his script day-by-day, and the stylistic consistency of the completed film cannot mask a number of unresolved themes and ideas. For all that, Blood from the Mummy's Tomb is Holt's most distinctive work, and effortlessly the best of Hammer's recent attempts to 'develop' the classic horror themes."
So, take it from a British movie magazine you've never heard... Death shouldn't keep you from realizing your goals. Never fear the idea of time running out. If you should drop dead while trying to achieve your goals, some guy named Michael Carreras will step in, and you'll still get all the posthumous glory.
In that way, Holt's story mirrors his onscreen mummy. His bidding was completed from beyond the grave! Seth Holt!
