Sometimes, your biggest critics can be your own family. In Everybody Loves Raymond, no matter how hard poor Robert works, he fails to win the respect of his brother or his parents. Robert is the Barone family punching bag, forever yearning for his moment in the sun.

Well, Brad Garrett may not be exactly like Robert Barone, but both men dealt with a few tough critics in their own families.

During an interview with The Gazette, Garrett confessed that his own children weren’t very big fans of his sitcom, Everybody Loves Raymond.

“They can’t even listen to Ray’s voice on a Monday night,” said the actor. “They walk out of the room. I said, ‘I’ve got to do something to bring my kids back.’”

Luckily, Garrett’s children were in the minority. During its time on air, Everybody Loves Raymond enjoyed a healthy audience. It was also nominated for and won various awards during its nine-season run. Garrett attributed the success of the show to its relatability.

“People on the street will say, ‘Marie is my mom,’ or ‘You’re like my brother.’ It’s that old thing in comedy: When you hit home and have something where they feel they’re part of you, or you’re part of them, that’s what makes it.”

Still, this relatability was not enough to win over Garrett’s children. But fear not: Garrett’s voice acting talents in the Disney Pixar film Finding Nemo won them over. The actor voiced the pufferfish Bloat in the 2003 film. “When they saw that I was a blowfish, I was cool again,” said Garrett. “They got the Happy Meal, and it was Daddy.”
