Brad Garrett brought an indefinable charm to Everybody Loves Raymond

Garrett's talent gave the show an opportunity to level up.

It takes a great actor to give an audience something they had no idea they even needed, but Brad Garrett was simply that talented.

While many remember Garrett as lovable mope Robert Barone, you couldn’t deny that moments of Robert’s exuberance were some of the high points of Everybody Loves Raymond. Fans of the series may agree that some of the funniest moments in the series come when Robert breaks out his funky, funky dance moves.

Garrett revealed that these hilariously awkward moments weren’t the result of careful choreography; they were organic. “I danced on one show (last year), and that was a big mistake, because they remembered that,” said Garrett during an interview with The Cincinnati Enquirer. “I’m not really athletic.”

Series star Ray Romano seemed just as entertained by Garrett’s moves. “We thought it was hysterical,” said Romano. “We didn’t teach him that all week. That’s him. We knew he had it in him.”

But while there’s no doubt that Robert was a hilarious character, Garrett also understood that he was more than just the laughs he received from an audience. The actor credited the writers for turning Robert into a real character, capable of complex thought. “They took a guy who’s one-dimensional and wrote him to be very complex, and in turmoil, and have a life outside his work,” said Garrett. “It’s been a great season.”

“He brings something we never knew was there when we were writing the show,” said Romano during an interview with The Los Angeles Daily News. “He brings that quirky, weird thing, which is just what I wanted. He’s just offbeat enough. At first, I was worried because he stole the show with five lines. Now he’s stealing it with a noise.”
