Have you ever considered that your heroes have their own heroes? It may seem strange to think about at first. But today’s idols were once fledgling performers, looking to celebrated actors for inspiration.

Carol Burnett, herself a comedic hero to many, had her own fair share of mentors and idols. In an article for Interview Magazine, Burnett divulged that one of her personal icons was a well-known film performer.

“I think people are going to be what they’re going to be,” said the star of The Carol Burnett Show. “In other words, one of the nicest people I ever met in my life was my movie star idol, and that was Jimmy Stewart. Everybody loved him.”

Likeability is a powerful currency. Fame gives a person power, the ability to sway others with little to no effort. What Burnett seemed to truly admire about Stewart wasn’t his fame or his power; it was how little those things seemed to affect his personality. Stewart was a shockingly good person, kind to all he knew. It was an impression that lasted a lifetime on Burnett.

“Of course, if you want to give somebody power, he [Stewart] certainly had it,” said Burnett. “But there was nobody that I ever met who was that big of a star who was so humble, and I think he would’ve been that way no matter what. Somebody who’s full of themselves, they’d probably be that way if they were a shoe salesman.”
