Dan Haggerty became a real-life Grizzly Adams when he began supporting a wildlife foundation
"It was about a real man, and it was also about family," said the actor of the iconic series.
Though The Life and Times of Grizzly Adams ended in 1978, actor Dan Haggerty continued to stay involved in conservation.
The actor starred as the mountain man in both the 1974 film and the television adaptation of the same name.
During an interview with The Times, Haggerty reflected on the series. “It was about a real man, and it was also about family,” said the actor. “Yep, his family might have been an Indian scout, a mountain man with a mule and a grizzly bear named Ben, but there was always a lesson to be learned.”
In the early 2000s, Haggerty remained involved in charity work that his character would have been proud of.
“I’m involved with two wildlife foundations which help wounded animals return to the wild,” Haggerty said. “I have my website where I provide autograph photos for donations to a children’s group called Young Adventurers, which was started to build vision and character for the young of America.”
During another interview with The Daily Herald, Haggerty admitted that as an actor, he was under the watchful eye of a judgmental public.
“Being in the public eye, you can stumble, but you can’t stumble in front of the public too often because you have an image to maintain,” said the actor. “It’s not that you’re living for the public, but without them, you wouldn’t be where you’re at.”
