Dick Van Dyke discovered a love for comedy while starring in a Christmas pageant as a child

Life is too short not to pay attention to passions that bring you joy, and some of our favorite actors are proof of that. Dick Van Dyke has lived an incredibly long life, and through it all he has spent it filling his time with activities he loves.

Not just a talented actor, Van Dyke is also an accomplished singer and dancer, rounding out his entertainment career. Van Dyke recently spoke at an event in Malibu, where he took a brief journey to the past.

The actor recalled his performance roots, according to an article for PEOPLE. Van Dyke didn't discover his love of performing on any big Hollywood film set. Instead, he was bitten by the acting bug as a child when he performed in a pageant.

Specifically, a young Van Dyke was "doing a Christmas pageant at church and I was the baby Jesus."

Not only did Van Dyke discover a love for performing during the pageant, but he also discovered that he had a knack for comedy.

"I don't know what I did, but I got laughs," said the actor. "I did something funny. And I said, 'I like this.'"

The experience kick-started a passion for comedy, which would eventually become an incredibly lucrative career.

"I was in all the plays in high school of course and I was the class clown, as you would imagine," said Van Dyke. "But making people laugh was a lot of fun. It is."

Van Dyke starred in hit comedies like The Dick Van Dyke Show, where his flair for physical comedy kept audiences laughing for five seasons.
