Dick Van Dyke is so humble that his friends had to remind him that he was a star
Van Dyke was so talented that Carl Reiner called him "sickening."
Dick Van Dyke isn’t just an actor; he’s also an extremely talented singer and dancer. As a triple threat, you couldn’t blame the guy for walking around with a fairly inflated ego. Yet somehow, throughout all of his years at the top of the Hollywood podium, Dick Van Dyke has managed to remain a delightfully humble man.
“You have to keep telling this guy he’s a star,” said Van Dyke’s co-star, Morey Amsterdam, during an interview with The Buffalo News. “He doesn’t know it yet.” Amsterdam and Van Dyke starred in the popular sitcom The Dick Van Dyke Show together.
Series creator Carl Reiner was also quick to praise his series star, arguing that Van Dyke was so talented, it was almost unbearable.
“He’s the greatest single male performing talent working today,” said Reiner. “He’s so good it’s sickening to us actors who watch him work every day. It’s terrible to realize that no matter what you do, he can do it better. He’s jack of all trades - and master.”
Van Dyke loved show business, but he also enjoyed turning his good fortune outward and trying to help the community. Originally, his plan was not to remain in show business.
“I’m not turning my back on show business,” said the actor. I’ve enjoyed every one of these 20 years and wouldn’t change a minute of them. It’s just that I want to devote the last half - I hope half - of my life to growing, changing, becoming a different person, one who does something for someone else’s sake.”
