Estelle Getty was so short she had to buy children's clothes
Getty played older, but there's no playing taller!
"Short people got no reason." So goes the song by legendary songwriter Randy Newman. But, here's the thing: Newman was singing the song from the perspective of an ignorant person. The irony may be lost on many, but the truth is that Newman was trying to spotlight how ridiculous any prejudice really is. He's not being crass and insensitive— he's making fun of people who are crass and insensitive.
The truth is that short people are the same as anyone else. Their clothes are just much smaller.
While any life is filled with a share of strife, Estelle Getty's had the bonus of a struggle to find these small clothes. She was a tiny lady, and it was a gamble to find the types of duds that suited her. The Golden Girls actress explained the dire sartorial situation in her fabulously-named memoir, If I knew Then What I Know Now... So What?

While it may have offered a temporary solution to the problem, shopping in the kids' aisle was not a sound long-term strategy. However, it did bring a lot of business to at least one local tradesperson.
"Then, as I reached a certain age and the clothes for kids got crazier, I had to stop. From that day on it was Alteration City. All of which delighted my tailor, who is now buying a home on Rodeo Drive."
Here's hoping Golden Girls let her keep some of her better-fitting costumes!
