George Lindsey said that he came up with this famous ''Gooberism'' himself

However, he's not the only one!

The Andy Griffith Show had some solid catchphrases throughout its 8-season run. There were "Shazam!" and "Goooolllly!" from Gomer Pyle, two recurring exclamations that doubtlessly carried him to his own spinoff. Barney had "Nip it in the bud," which people use to this day. Andy had "Outstandin'!" a tiny bolt of positivity that's still bringing smiles.

Whether they were conceived to be reiterated, all these quotes proved popular enough to bear repeating.

But here's one Andy Griffith Show quote that begs further investigation: When Goober does one of his famous "takeoffs" of Cary Grant, the country-fried cousin characterizes Grant as saying "Judy, Judy, Judy!" While he didn't sound a lot like Grant, Goober still left a big impression, as the line is often the first people think of when Cary Grant comes to mind.

An interesting fact: Cary Grant never said "Judy, Judy, Judy," not in Only Angels Have Wings, or in any other movie.

In an interview with Smashing Interviews Magazine, actor George Lindsey discussed how he felt he was responsible for the phenomenon, and the oft-misattributed quotation!

"I came up with that myself," said Lindsey. "There’s not really a story behind it. I got the script and I saw that Cary Grant was written there so maybe I had it in the back of my mind that he said 'Judy, Judy, Judy' in one of his movies. I don’t know. But, I transcribed it into a 'Gooberism.'"

It is worth noting, however, that Lindsey isn't alone in taking credit for the line's association with Cary Grant. He may have been influenced by famous impressionist and F Troop star Larry Storch, who would frequently use "Judy, Judy, Judy," as part of his nightclub routine! While it may just be Hollywood conjecture, apparently Storch was doing his Cary Grant impersonation when Judy Garland walked into the club. Storch greeted the actress, and one of the most misunderstood catchphrases in Hollywood lore was born!

It should be noted that Cary Grant NEVER said that phrase nor did ever work with Ms. Garland! Larry Strorch created the impression and Lindsey just kept it going!
