Charles M. Schulz didn't like Lucy, either
"Lucy is not a favorite, because I don't especially like her, that's all," said Schulz.
It's not unusual to play favorites, even if it's amongst your own children. Even if you're the proud father of a few comic strip characters, you're bound to prefer one over the others.
Such was the case for Charles M. Schulz. Schulz was responsible for the creation of some of your favorite Peanuts characters. During an interview with Psychology Today, Schulz revealed that he shared in the favorites of the majority of Peanuts fans.
"Snoopy, Linus, and Charlie Brown," said Schulz when asked which of the characters he liked best.
Not only did Schulz play favorites, but he also wasn't shy about letting people know which member of the gang he liked the least. Let's be honest, we weren't very shocked by the answer.
"Lucy is not a favorite, because I don't especially like her, that's all," said Schulz.
It's wrong to hate kids, but Lucy is a character that filled viewers with a white-hot rage every time she pulled that football away from a kicking Charlie Brown. She's his primary antagonist, and we're always grateful when she gets a taste of her own medicine.
Still, Schulz argued that while he didn't personally like Lucy, he had no plans to remove her from the Peanuts gang. Lucy may not have been nice, but she served a purpose in Schulz's storytelling.
"She works, and a central comic-strip character is not only one who fills his role very well but who will provide ideas by the very nature of his personality," said Schulz. "This is why Charlie Brown, Linus, Snoopy, and Lucy appear more than the others. Their personalities are so broad and flexible that they provide more ideas."
