Here's an inside look at the in-depth planning required to film an episode of Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom
Host Marlin Perkins said that planning for episodes began "months" in advance.

Marlin Perkins was many things: A television host, a zoologist, and so much more. But one thing that Perkins seemed to pride himself on was that no matter what challenge he faced, he was always well prepared for anything.
During an interview with the Sioux City Journal, Perkins revealed that as the host of Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom, he was involved in the bulk of preparations for future episodes.
"We plan, of course, months in advance," said Perkins. "We sit down with our producer for a long brain session. I usually have a few pet projects written down."
Working with wild animals is always a bit of a gamble, and Perkins was able to minimize unexpected consequences by ensuring that he and his crew were diligent.
"We don't just pick up a crew and go out to shoot, Hollywood style," said Perkins. "The cameramen go on ahead. Then we come in for a while and do our work. Then we leave, and the photographers stay to wrap the show up."
Perkins' deep understanding of animals was also an incredible asset when working with them on the series. "The personalities of animals differ, just as do people's," said Perkins. "A tiger, for instance, can change mood in a short time. And you will find that animals most often react to a combination of odor and attitude on the part of people."
