Griffin Dunne's gruesome appearance disturbed people on the set of An American Werewolf in London
“I’m glad to be associated with something so weird,” said the actor. “Of course, it wasn’t so much fun being dead.”
The life of a horror actor is a tough one, especially if you’re trying to make friends on set. Of course, someone like Griffin Dunne isn’t simply a horror actor. Dunne became known for his roles in movies like My Girl (1991) and Quiz Show (1994). In addition to his work on stage, Dunne is also a capable director and producer.
But before all of that, Dunne was just a lonely boy on a horror set. In the 1980s, the actor won the role of Jack Goodman in the comedy horror film, An American Werewolf in London (1981).
“It was a very interesting script,” Dunne said during an interview with The Daily News. “I just whipped right through it. And I wanted to do it. I do have a very big part after I’m killed.”
Spoilers aside, a majority of Dunne’s rendition of the character was performed as a walking corpse. Dunne confessed that while he enjoyed the role, his gruesome appearance made others apprehensive about approaching him.
“I did like Jack’s attitude about being dead, but wearing that makeup made it very lonely,” said the actor. “I looked gross. People were disturbed. I would wander around the set - with no one really talking to me...I guess it was almost like being one of the undead.”
Years later, Dunne was able to recall his filming experience fondly, for the most part. “I’m glad to be associated with something so weird,” said the actor. “Of course, it wasn’t so much fun being dead. The makeup hurts.”
