Harry Morgan was considered a father figure on the set of M*A*S*H
Morgan grew emotional when discussing his co-stars.
After spending so many years together, it was impossible for the cast of M*A*S*H not to form a sort of familial unit of their own while on set. This sort of camaraderie wasn’t limited to the veterans of the series.
Newer arrivals like Harry Morgan were welcomed into the fray with open arms. During an interview with The Boston Globe, actor Loretta Swit called co-star Harry Morgan her “best friend,” while actor David Ogden Stiers viewed the actor as a father figure.
Much like his character, Morgan was humble throughout his own celebration.
“I don’t know what to say about that,” said Morgan when told of his co-star’s adoration. “Even though there’s a lot of horseplay, the whole tone here has been so gentle. I’ve never worked with a finer bunch of people than this gang...Some I deeply love. I almost get emotional about it.”
Although Morgan was more reluctant to accept his own impact, he was more than happy to discuss how and why M*A*S*H became such an important fixture in people’s lives.
“People wonder, and I wonder myself, why is M*A*S*H such a big success?” asked Morgan.
“One thing that occurred to me is that in this business there is, and always has been, so goddamned much rudeness! I mean, you can turn around, and somebody will be rude to you. On M*A*S*H, the instances of intentional rudeness on the part of anybody are non-existent.”
