Here's how Adrienne King won the role of Alice Hardy in Friday the 13th (1980)
The actor won a killer part in an iconic film.
Though the trope of a “final girl” is more recent, it was never easy to find an actor up to the task of playing the ultimate survivor. Of course, perhaps one of the best-known final girls is Alice Hardy of Friday the 13th (1980), played by actor Adrienne King.
While Friday the 13th was a lower-budget film, the character of Alice was a highly sought-after role. King recounted her experience auditioning for the job:
“I remember being in the casting office and seeing hundreds of other girls,” King said, according to Making Friday the 13th: The Legend of Camp Blood by David Grove.
So why was King chosen out of so many other talented actors? It seemed she simply looked the part of a survivor. “I think I had a look that was different and fresh,” the actor said. “I wasn’t just a pretty blonde or anything like that. I looked like I could handle myself.”
Of course, the ability to remain self-reliant wasn’t the only quality that kept Alice alive by the end of Friday the 13th.
“When I read the script, I was excited that I was going to end up being the only survivor in the entire film. I also liked that Alice was a brave and strong woman, not your typical horror film bimbo. I knew Friday the 13th wasn’t going to be a work of art, but I was the star.”
