Here's why Frank Sutton advised people not to go into acting
Why the strange advice was surprisingly optimistic.
When people think of becoming a star, they're probably imagining the glitz and glamor that comes with fame, instead of the harsh and arduous road to get there. It can take years for actors to reap the benefits of their hard work, and many can spend ages waiting for a big break that might never come.
Of course, some actors like Frank Sutton were lucky enough to have loved ones in their lives to help them achieve their dreams.
Sutton was known for portraying Vince Carter in Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C. While the role made him a star, Sutton had dreamed of becoming an actor ever since he was a young man.
Sutton explained his good fortune to The Akron Beacon Journal. The actor had a wife who was willing to support him as he chased his theatrical dreams.
"I never went through that desperate period that sidelines so many actors," said Sutton. "True, there was one year I made only $2,600, but my wife pulled me through. She continued to work through my early years and this was a great help. I didn't have to take other jobs. I could devote all my time to acting."
Of course, even with the support of his wife, Sutton lived a fairly frugal lifestyle before he became famous. "I got so used to chuck steak that it's still my favorite even though I can now afford filet mignon."
Still, after overcoming his own challenges, Sutton ensured that the future generation of actors would remain resilient.
"When people ask for advice, I always tell them not to go into acting," said Sutton. "Those who heed this advice weren't meant to be actors. The people who are really actors will ignore me."
