How Ricardo Montalbán avoided the temptations of Hollywood
The actor said that he took after his parents.
The life of an actor can feel glamorous to the outsider. However, those in possession of fame and power know that there are more than a few risks that come with their fair share of rewards.
Though few discuss the dark underbelly of Hollywood, Ricardo Montalbán had no issue with honesty. As the star of Fantasy Island, Montalbán knew that getting everything you’ve ever wanted came at a high price.
“The temptations actors face are very real indeed,” said Montalbán during an interview with the Star-Phoenix. “But if you have a mental attitude, goals in your life, purpose and direction, that will prevent you from falling.”
With a strong constitution, the Fantasy Island actor never feared these moments of indecision; rather, he welcomed them. “Temptations are to be welcomed...because only with them can you temper your character with strength. If there were no temptations, there would be no way to practice strength.”
Such resolve could never be achieved alone. The actor credited his parents with instilling good values within him and making him a smart, capable man.
“I was taught to have good manners,” said Montalbán. “Simple things, like closing your mouth when you’re eating. Sitting correctly in a chair. Somewhat different from the way most American boys are brought up.”
Montalbán was proud of the person he had become, and he planned to use his values to guide him into the future. “My parents taught me by example,” said the actor, “and I hope I have done the same for my children.”
