Though Amy and Robert made a cute couple, actor Monica Horan was happily married to Everybody Loves Raymond creator Phil Rosenthal. The two married in 1990, though at the time of her casting, viewers were unaware of their relationship. In an interview with Tulsa World, Rosenthal admitted he preferred it that way.

“I’m glad most people didn’t know we’re married,” said Rosenthal. “It let them focus on her talent.”

Of course, Horan’s cheerful (albeit slightly neurotic) portrayal of Amy was popular with viewers as she and Robert went through the trials and tribulations of a new relationship.

“For the next four years, it was this on-again, off-again thing,” said Horan of Amy and Robert’s relationship. However, Horan didn’t mind her inconsistent appearances. “I’m on the best show on television, and I get to be home most of the time.”

Of course, Amy became a more fixed character as her relationship with Robert became more serious. The two characters eventually wed in season seven, cementing Amy’s place in the Barone family, as well as Horan’s place on the Everybody Loves Raymond cast.

“I was friendly with everybody,” said Horan. “But when I became a regular, it was like going on vacation. It was like a comfortable temp job.”

Not only did the series have a positive effect on Horan’s career, but it also greatly benefited her personal life. “Getting stuff doesn’t come close to what we’ve gotten from this show on so many other levels,” said the actor during an interview with The Sioux City Journal. “It has helped me with the dynamics with my family. That’s a very challenging thing.
