Rue McClanahan had a passion for writing
Though she was known for her acting, McClanahan was a woman of many talents.
A woman of many talents, Rue McClanahan truly was a golden girl. In addition to her time starring on the popular sitcom as the sultry Blanche Devereaux, the actor also appeared in popular programs like Maude and Mama’s Family.
However, according to an article for the Los Angeles Times, McClanahan also had quite a talent for playwrighting. The actor said that she had been working on the music and lyrics to a farce titled Oedipus Schmedipus.
“I just thought it would be fun,” McClanahan said. “It was always my pet. Friends would want to go out, and I worked on it instead. It really made me laugh harder than any of them.”

“In writing, there’s that unexpected inspiration that presents itself as a gift,” she said. "You can move at your own pace. In acting, you have to act as a group. You can only move as quickly as the slowest member of the group.”
Of course, McClanahan’s passions didn’t necessarily mean that she was looking for a change in careers. “I’ll always be an actress,” said McClanahan. “There are just certain things I can’t say any other way. I can act anything. I don’t want to spend the rest of my life in comedy.”
