Sheriff Taylor was not Andy Griffith's favorite character on The Andy Griffith Show

Griffith had a different person in mind.

The good news is that Andy Taylor has no shortage of adoring fans. Who wouldn't love Andy Taylor? He's a fair and just Sheriff of Mayberry, a dedicated father to his son, and an all-around great guy. Andy Taylor is nearly everyone's favorite character on The Andy Griffith Show...except, of course, when you ask Andy Griffith himself.

During an interview with The Charlotte Observer, Griffith revealed that his favorite character on The Andy Griffith Show was in fact, not the man that he shared a name with and spent years portraying. So, if it wasn't Sheriff Taylor, then who was Andy Griffith's favorite character?

"Of course, Barney is my favorite character," said Griffith. Then he went one step further. "And Don was my favorite actor. Don and I have been friends since 1955 when we were in No Time for Sergeants together. And I think Don's a genius."

Knotts and Griffith hadn't worked together for quite some time, but Griffith still held him in high regard, both as an actor and as a friend. This was the case for many of his fellow costars of The Andy Griffith Show.

"We're friends," Griffith said of the cast. "Oh my God, yes. We will always remain friends. You know, you do a show and you like somebody and you say, 'Let's get together,' and you mean it. And you never do. But all of us guys spent all day long together for years. And years and years. And we know an enormous amount about one another. And so we feel a closeness because of that."

While Griffith certainly can't say that Andy Taylor is his favorite character, we're sure that with all of the love and memories attached to the series, The Andy Griffith Show is certainly his favorite television program.

I personally don't have a favorite Andy Griffith show character. It took the entire cast to make up each individual episode. Griffith and Knotts just happen to be the main cast members - if that makes sense...

Barney is definitely high on my list, too, (along with the great Ernest T. Bass and The Darlings) Glad for the appreciation Andy had for Don.

All good but who can forget Floyd...say

I remember reading that Andy had to do several takes when doing a scene with "Floyd" because he would bust out laughing at Howard McNair!

I think my favorite characters would be Otis and Floyd. Floyd especially. Aunt Bea reminded me of my own Aunt Loretta in many ways. And Aunt Bea's friends remind me of the friends my grandparents had. They were born in 1893, 1903, 1903 and 1906. Lost world I feel blessed to have experienced first hand.

Excellent article.
Andy and Don really loved one another. They had excellent chemistry. Can't think of any other duo to compare them to. They were a great comedy duo. I remember Ron Howard say on one of the reunion shows, that Andy and Don were the greatest comedy duo of all time. I totally agree with him.

Thank you dm1bellamy.
Yes, the name Ed Crumpacker really tickles my fancy. Very unique name. Loved it ever since I heard it.
And BTW, I'm pretty sure that he was a real person.
