Sure, the show is called Kolchak: The Night Stalker, but maybe Kolchak would be able to get a little bit more done if he were willing to accept some help. No man is an island, even if that man spends his life hunting down supernatural phenomena.

In the year that it ran on air, it seemed that the only consistency in Kolchak: The Night Stalker was Kolchak himself. Played by Darren McGavin, Kolchak was constantly hunting down a new lead. But now and again, audiences would welcome familiar characters in the series, like Tony Vincenzo, the gumshoe's editor.

According to an interview, Simon Oakland, who played Vincenzo, found himself agreeing with fans' hopes that Vincenzo would join Kolchak on some of his missions.

"I wish he would, then, I could get away from the office," said Oakland during an interview with The Columbia Record. "But, the scripts have been running this way. They want more of me in the office, but we've found we're competing with the other networks for action, so it's been all Darren's (McGavin) show. I suppose I could help him, but.."

Oakland understood his character's duty in the series, even if he felt stifled by it sometimes.

"Well, I'm supposed to keep the office scenes alive because they can go dead," said the actor. "I've got to bring some organic life into them, and I'm really trying to bring a feeling to it...I wish I had a little more to do in the show. I don't like it, but I don't mind."

Of course, Oakland had his own ideas about how Vincenzo's role may expand in the story. Instead of a comrade, the actor argued that perhaps he could be a victim of those spooky villains on the loose.

"It's possible that a future script might feature me, where I might be threatened by the macabre," said the actor. "I hope there is, because it's a good idea. I do get letters from my fans who are disappointed because I don't get better parts."
