As two talented comedians, Carol Burnett and Dick Van Dyke were fast friends. However, the duo's relationship didn't begin when Burnett brought him into the cast of The Carol Burnett Show.

"Dick and I go back 20 years to when we both appeared on The Garry Moore Show," said Burnett during an interview with the Associated Press. "Over the years, I've appeared on his show and he has appeared on my show, and we always have a marvelous time together."

In fact, Burnett actually revealed that Van Dyke's casting in the later season of The Carol Burnett Show happened "by accident" when Van Dyke was palling around with the rest of the cast.

"Dick was appearing on our show and kidding around with Harvey, saying, 'Look - I may be the guy who replaces you.' I said, 'What a great idea!'"

Unfortunately, Van Dyke only appeared in a handful of episodes before it was mutually decided that he wasn't the right fit for the series. Of course, the experience didn't sour Burnett and Van Dyke's friendship. When asked whether there was any bad blood between himself and the rest of the cast, Van Dyke dispelled any vicious rumors.

"Oh, God no, not that bunch," Van Dyke said during an interview with the St. Petersburg Times. "I've known Carol for more than 20 years. I'll be doing a guest spot on the show next month."
