This was the real reason that M*A*S*H was so popular, according to a cast member
The inside scoop, at last.
While many of us like to believe that the best of things are created by a bit of magic, the truth is that many of our favorite things burst into creation with a whole lot of hard work.
M*A*S*H gained the irresistible reputation of being one of the most popular shows of all time, an award-winning credit that still lingers to this very day.
Harry Morgan, best known for playing Colonel Sherman T. Potter, joined the cast of the series well past the premiere date, but audiences loved him as though he had been a member of the cast from day one.
During an interview with the Journal Gazette and Times-Courier, Morgan argued that what truly made the series special was the people who acted on it, in all varieties.
"I think it had a wonderful cast over the years, and it worked even when characters were replaced," said Morgan. "On that show, you could do that, because that's how an army unit operates. And when the show first started, the stories just poured in from guys who had been in real-life situations like that."
Morgan also believed that it was a testament to the show's sheer talent that they could effectively balance the funny and more serious sides of life.
"So the cast and the scripts were marvelous," said Morgan. "We always had two plots in each script - a humorous one and a serious one. The chemistry was great - we always had terrific guest stars, and that added to it as well. It didn't pay much to guest stars, but people would do M*A*S*H because it was such a good show - and they wanted to be a part of it."
